I watched the movies based on this novel, and loved them. Even though I knew that their adaptation was "loose," I found the novel a disappointment. The character of Anton, surprisingly enough, is more complex and ambiguous in the film than in the novel. The film version of Anton is a broken character, screwed up by his own bad choices.
